Tuto ClearSpot: coal-fired plant proximity explained

The Coal plants layer estimates nuisance and emissions pressure using distance to large combustion units. This note explains the threshold logic tied to your coal alert radius.

Threshold behaviour

When any operating, announced, or under-construction unit falls inside your configured radius, the exposure row is marked as "Not clear". Retired units that remain as structural stubs in some databases are filtered out when their status is clearly "retired".

Why distance still matters

PM2.5, NOx, and low-frequency truck or cooling noise all decay with range. ClearSpot does not model plumes hour by hour; the badge is a coarse proxy for living or sleeping next to major coal logistics.

Data source

Populate rows using licensed GEM / WRI style CSVs or the bundled import script cron/import_nuclear_coal_csv.php. Operators must respect third-party licences when blending commercial registers.
