How ClearSpot groups data into POI, NZOI, ZOI, and composite layers

ClearSpot mixes many environmental datasets on one globe. To keep the product understandable we classify every nuisance source into three spatial families, each with its own map behaviour and sensitivity controls.

POI — Points of interest

POI data are precise coordinates with a limited nuisance radius around each object. Today the main POI layer is wind turbines: each turbine is a point and your personal alert distance decides when the verdict flips to “Not clear”.

NZOI — Narrow zones of interest

NZOI layers combine documented polygons (transport corridors, agglomeration noise contours, and similar) with mesoscale night-sky fields on an H3 grid: noise and light pollution live here because they describe local “zones” rather than point hazards. When several NZOI sources are on, you can group them into one composite overlay so the map stays readable while still honouring your thresholds.

With the natural hazards module enabled, recent earthquakes, GDACS flood/volcano context, operational tropical cyclone positions from NOAA NHC, and curated tornado reports also render as NZOI markers. That layer is informational cartography in this release: it does not feed the binary clear / not clear exposure chip.

ZOI — Zones of interest (regional grids)

ZOI data use a wide hexagonal grid (H3) keyed by month or year: pollen, air quality, and mosquito risk. These layers answer questions at city, département, or regional scale. When you enable both pollen and air, ClearSpot can merge them into a single composite heat layer where each cell stores the worst breach against your personal thresholds; light remains a separate NZOI overlay.

Composite scoring

Behind the binary CLEAR / NOT CLEAR chip, the server still computes a weighted 0–100 exposure score from every active module so your history and notifications stay consistent. Composite map layers only change how pixels are painted; they do not weaken the underlying science filters.
